Charlotte Knowles – course director
Charlotte is a film-maker with more than 11 years experience working in film and television. She started as an actress, working first for the BBC and ITV in the UK and then for Screen Runner Productions and One World Artists in France. In 2006 she made the move into production, working first for China World Star Productions in Beijing and then with Director Babak Payami at FABRICA, Benetton’s centre for creative research and design in Treviso, Italy. In 2010 she returned to the UK and began setting up Shoots & Leaves Films: a creative collective of professional film-makers, videographers, producers, musicians, writers and illustrators. This now produces works of film, video, photography and music for clients, festivals and exhibitions all over the world. She has produced documentaries for BBC, ITN and Arte and is currently working on a series of independently-produced documentaries set in India, Thailand, Brazil and the USA. Charlotte started teaching film-making in 2009 and wrote the Shoots & Leaves Film Course in collaboration with her brother Chris. She became Course Director for The Independent Film Trust the following year.
Shell Coe – tutor
Shell is a London-based film-maker and is director of Planet Caravan – an independent film production company creating a diverse range of films together with television and online content. In the past, she has worked freelance as a self-shooting director, cinematographer, researcher, editing assistant and sound recorder on a variety of film formats from documentary to viral advertising both in the UK and abroad. In addition, she has first-hand experience of the business side of the industry, having worked in development and acquisitions at major US studios New Line Cinema and Paramount Pictures, as well as beinf assistant producer of the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). Since 2006, Shell has worked as a freelance tutor teaching Film, French, Italian, Spanish, Biology and English Literature to A-Level standard. She is happy to share the skills she has acquired working across the full spectrum of the film industry. She considers tutoring an opportunity to inspire others and also draws inspiration herself from the fresh perspectives of younger film-makers. Above all, she enjoys learning and likes the challenge of encouraging others to take a positive, bold approach to education, creativity and life.
Chris Knowles – tutor
Christopher is a composer, sound designer and teacher. He graduated from Manchester University in 2007 with an MA in Literature and Literary Theory. He subsequently won a year-long scholarship to attend Fabrica, the Benetton Group’s communications research centre, in Treviso in Italy. His client list includes Benetton, the World Health Organisation, RadioTelevisioneSvizzera and Stradivarius Records. Christopher is currently a teacher of English and Media Studies at Kingsdale Foundation School in South London.
Holly Rivers – tutor
Holly is a creative, colourful, blue-haired individual who is passionate about working with people and creating inspiring films. What she loves most about working on the IFTb Film School in a Box programme is the way in which it enables her to help others to find their own voice through film-making and hence to progress towards realising their full potential. She can’t imagine a better way to utilise her skills! Holly graduated from University College Falmouth’s Broadcasting degree with a first-class degree and went on to work professionally within the industry across television, film and online platforms. She continues to shoot and edit on a freelance basis and has worked on a wide range of projects. She is also an experienced drama practitioner and leads imaginative classes for children of all age-groups. She is also employed as a children’s party entertainer where she gets to enjoy face-painting, balloon-modelling, story-telling and puppetry! In her spare time, Holly loves drawing, blogging, fashion, circus arts, photography, going to gigs, cinema and being with friends and family. She hates eggs, minimalism, close-mindedness and the cold. Holly hopes to get a chance to get behind the camera with you soon!
